The Holiday of Heroes is dedicated to the death of the Commander-in-Chief of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists Yevhen Konovalets and it is celebrated on May 23rd. He died on this day in 1938 in Rotterdam from a bomb that was plated by a NKVD worker Pavlo Sudopltovyi.
May was a tragic month for other outstanding figures of the Ukrainian independence movement of the XXth century. In particular, on May 3rd, 1924, Mykola Mikhnovskyi, a founder of Ukrainian nationalism, committed a suicide in rather mysterious circumstances. On May 25th, 1926, Symon Petlyura, the main leader of the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was shot in Paris by a Joint State Political Directorate agent Sholem Schwartzbard.
